Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Eric Davis to appear at La Salle high school

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Eric Davis will headline the 29th annual La Salle high school sports stag on Wednesday, January 23.

La Salle will honor its newest Athletic Hall of Fame inductees at the stag. The Hall was created in 1995 to recognize the school’s great athletes and coaches. This also will be the third year for La Salle’s Cornerstone Awards, which are presented to individuals who have been instrumental in supporting athletics at La Salle.

Davis is a 1990 World Series champion, two-time All Star and three-time Gold Glove winner. 

The evening with be lead by former Channel 19 sportscaster Dan Hoard.

Only 250 participants may purchase VIP tickets to attend a celebrity reception with hors d’oeuvres and drinks before dinner. The VIP reception begins at 5:30 p.m. Other participants may purchase general admission tickets. Dinner begins at 7 p.m.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Mother of Mercy High School invites grade school students of all ages to their Basketball Spirit Game on Tuesday, January 22.  The Bobcats will take on Oak Hills at 4:30, 6:00 and 7:30 p.m.

All grade school girls will be admitted for free and are invited to cheer with Mercy students on a high-intensity, energetic night.  The evening will also include fun activities, give-a-ways and Bobcat spirit!

Flying Pig takes off at five urban Libraries to encourage kids to be fit

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is partnering with the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon and the Nutrition Council of Greater Cincinnati to help youngsters “Be Smart, Eat Well and Move More.” Once again this year kids can get their “Oink” on at the Avondale, Corryville, Price Hill, and West End branch libraries and the Main Library’s Children’s Learning Center. 

Through May 4, kids (ages 5-12) are invited to keep track of the distances they move, the healthy food choices they make, and the time they spend exercising their brains with the Public Library by logging their efforts on the Kids’ Marathon “Hog Log,” available at all five of these Library locations and online at www.flyingpigmarathon.com.

FOREST PARK, OH (FOX19) - Winton Woods High School graduate Dayeesha Hollins, class of 2009, was honored before the University of Cincinnati basketball game against Villanova with her 1000th point ball.

Hollins achieved the milestone by combining her first year of play at the University of Michigan and the last two years at UC.

McAuley softball players Randi Kelsey and Morgan Wells were recently named MVPs of a prestigious softball showcase. 

From January 5-6, they were two of 200 athletes at the Queen of Diamonds Softball Showcase, which was held at Kent State University.  Three thousand softball players from all over the United States applied to attend; only 200 were selected to show their talents on the softball field. Both Randi and Morgan were named “Game MVPs” of the showcase.  Only 26 other young women were homored in this way.

 McAuley High School recently held an athletic signing ceremony for three seniors. 

Jordyn Thiery, the daughter of Daryl and Sheila Thiery of Springfield Township, signed to play volleyball at Gannon University in Erie, PA. Jordan plans to major in business next year.  Besides excelling as an outside hitter, defensive specialist and team captain in volleyball, Jordan has been on McAuley’s track team for the past three years as a middle distance runner and high jumper.  In fact, she was a member of McAuley’s 4x800 State Runner Up 4x800 relay team when she was just a sophomore.  Jordyn came to McAuley from John Paul II School.

ALLSTON, MA – Harvard’s sophomore linebacker Jacob Lindsey (Elder ’11) and Yale’s senior nose guard Nick Daffin (Elder ’09) proudly represented Elder High School in “The Game” – Harvard vs. Yale, one of the most storied college football rivalries dating back to 1875. 

Daffin had an interception which led to a Yale touchdown and a 24-20 lead with 7:07 left to play, but Harvard prevailed, coming away with the 34-24 win.
