Four McAuley seniors win Cheviot Savings and Loan scholarships

COLLEGE HILL, OH (FOX19) - Four McAuley High School seniors have received college scholarships from Cheviot Savings and Loan.

The $500 dollar scolarships were awarded for different qualities and accomplishments of the four seniors.

Senior Katherine Orth won the Character Award. The daughter of Mike and Karen Orth of White Oak, she will use her scholarship at the University of Cincinnati where she will major in dietetics and minor in Spanish.

Christina Farwick won the Award for Service.  She plans to study forensic science at Thomas More College and lives in White Oak with her parents, Rob and Martha Farwick.

Senior Class Co-President Rachel Pierani won the Leadership Award.  Rachel will study nursing at Thomas More College in the fall.  She is the daughter of Randy and Michele Pierani of Bright, Indiana.

Three McAuley seniors commit to college sports

COLLEGE HILL, OH (FOX19) - Three McAuley High School seniors participated in an athletic commitment ceremony after school on May 15.

Alexis Bierbaum, the daughter of Phil and Denise Bierbaum of Bridgetown, will by playing volleyball at Thomas More College where she plans to major in nursing.

Jamie Ertel will also attend Thomas More College where she will play softball and major in biology.  She is the daughter of Matt and Mary McKeever of Mt. Healthy.

Committing to play softball next year for Heidelberg University is Randi Kelsey.  The daughter of Davy and Mary Kelsey of Springfield Township, Randi has plans to major in criminal justice.

Northwest high school student ranked second in the nation for desktop publishing

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Kelsi Garibay, a junior in the Financial Services Program at Northwest High School, ranked second in the nation in desktop publishing at the 2013 Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference.

A total of six Northwest business students traveled to Orlando, Florida for this conference between May 7-12, 2013. The students competed in business events, networked with students from across the country, and attended leadership workshops with industry leaders. Approximately 6,000 business students from 26 states participated in conference.

Kelsi Garibay competed in Desktop Publishing. Fox Moeller competed in Fundamental Accounting. Antenajia Carter competed in Fundamental Word and received her Ambassador Award. Jenna Ahr competed in Financial Math and Analysis and received her Ambassador Torch Award. Alexandra Roelofs and Gage Smith competed in Administrative Support Concepts and received their Ambassador Torch Awards.

Gateway to Recognize Outstanding Students at May 14 Awards Convocation

COVINGTON, KY — Gateway Community and Technical College will recognize the exemplary academic, leadership and technical performance of 188 students, including 106 scholarship recipients, Tuesday at its annual Night of Excellence. The convocation will take place at 7 p.m. at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Ky.

Rani Clark and David Strange, both of Ft. Thomas, received top honors as recipients of the J.D. Patton Award for academic and technical excellence. The Phi Theta Kappa academic honorary earned the award for best student organization of the year.

Recipients are selected by faculty and staff committees and academic divisions based on student performance. Individual students receiving awards, include:

Winton Woods Team Finds Stock Market Game Profitable

FOREST PARK, OH (FOX19) - If the money they earned was real, three Winton Woods High School students who participated in the Stock Market Game through the University of Cincinnati’s Economics Center would be rolling in the dough.

Seniors Blake Warren and Zach Purdin and sophomore Orlando Underwood earned over $11,000 in 20 weeks and were ranked 11th in the region out of 634 teams at the end of the game. Their financial management teacher Elaine Sugawara-Forster said that’s the highest standing a team from Winton Woods has ever achieved in the seven years she’s been using the game. “This team put in serious thought and research and used their problem-solving skills to determine what to buy and sell,” she said.

COLLEGE HILL, OH (FOX19) - The thirty-fourth annual McAuley High School Academic and Service Awards Banquet was held on May 1. 

At the banquet, 473 award certificates were presented to 230 students for service activities, first honors in all quarters, achievement in academic subjects, and a host of other areas.  Also celebrated were the Latin teams who won so many state awards, Vocal Ensemble who competed in last summer’s World Choir Games, senior retreat leaders, and the young ladies in the Women in Medicine, Women in Engineering, and Women in Law programs.   Additionally, five very special awards were presented.

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson to Speak at Gateway Commencement May 15

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) — Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson will be the commencement speaker May 15 at Gateway Community and Technical College’s 12th annual graduation ceremony, according to Dr. Ed Hughes, college president and CEO.

“We are delighted that the lieutenant governor could join us for this milestone event in our students’ lives,” Dr. Hughes said. “We believe Lt. Gov. Abramson’s example of achievement and community service will be inspiring to our graduates.”

The class of 2013 numbers 845 graduates who have earned a total of 1,464 credentials. The credential count exceeds the number of graduates because students may earn more than one credential.  The credential breakdown includes 362 associate degrees, 93 technical diplomas and 1,009 certificates.
