Gateway to Recognize Outstanding Students at May 14 Awards Convocation

COVINGTON, KY — Gateway Community and Technical College will recognize the exemplary academic, leadership and technical performance of 188 students, including 106 scholarship recipients, Tuesday at its annual Night of Excellence. The convocation will take place at 7 p.m. at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Ky.

Rani Clark and David Strange, both of Ft. Thomas, received top honors as recipients of the J.D. Patton Award for academic and technical excellence. The Phi Theta Kappa academic honorary earned the award for best student organization of the year.

Recipients are selected by faculty and staff committees and academic divisions based on student performance. Individual students receiving awards, include:

COLLEGE HILL, OH (FOX19) - The thirty-fourth annual McAuley High School Academic and Service Awards Banquet was held on May 1. 

At the banquet, 473 award certificates were presented to 230 students for service activities, first honors in all quarters, achievement in academic subjects, and a host of other areas.  Also celebrated were the Latin teams who won so many state awards, Vocal Ensemble who competed in last summer’s World Choir Games, senior retreat leaders, and the young ladies in the Women in Medicine, Women in Engineering, and Women in Law programs.   Additionally, five very special awards were presented.

Bethany House co-founder announces retirement after 30 years

WESTWOOD, OH (FOX19) - The womnan who co-founded Bethany House Services nearly 30 years ago has announced plans to retire at the end of this year.

Sr. Mary Stanton, who serves as Executive Director, is set to retire and search has already begun to replace her.

Founded in 1984 as Bethany House of Hospitality, BHS now serves more than 2,000 women and children each year, providing emergency shelter, life skills training, family stabilization, education and employment referrals, transitional and permanent housing, among its many programs and services.

RRMS student competes in National Geography Bee

RRMS student competes in National Geography Bee

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -  A Rapid Run Middle School sixth grader has made it to the semifinals in the Ohio National Geographic Bee by the National Geographic Society.

Sam Herzog is competing in the 2013 Ohio National Geographic Bee at Grandview Heights High School. The winner will then receive many prizes along with a trip to Washington, D.C. where they will represent Ohio as a finalist and compete at the National Geographic Society headquarters.

When Sam was asked how he was feeling about the upcoming State Geography Bee, he said "I'm anxious to check out the competition. It’ll be interesting to be competing against some students that are younger than me, and others that are older than me!"

Schools all over Ohio held bees with their fourth through eighth grade students. From there, the winners of each school took qualifying tests to determine the top 100 in the nation to compete at the state level. Sam was one of the few who made it to the semifinals.

PRICE HILL, OH (FOX19) - A 4th grade student at the Holy Family School in Price Hill was recently honored by the Ohio Lottery as an Academic All Star for the month of March.

Duaith Hurst is described as a bright and hard-working fourth grader.  She has been on the Honor Roll and she is a true leader.  She goes above and beyond what she is asked to do and she demonstrates “star student” behavior.  She is able to stay on task and complete excellent, thorough work.  She is willing to help others in the classroom and she shows school spirit and pride.  Her all around positive attitude and academic excellence are noteworthy.

For being recognized as an Academic All Star, Hurst will receive an assortment of Partners in Education merchandise from the Ohio Lottery along with a gift certificate. 

Terri Smith named GGCL Coach of the Year

Terri Smith named GGCL Coach of the Year

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Seton Swim Coach Terri Smith has been named the GGCL Coach of the Year.

This is Smith’s 15th year coaching the swim team. “This is an absolute passion of mine,” said Smith. “I enjoy seeing the girls succeed in and out of the water and I continue to be blessed with a team of very hard workers each year.”

The Seton swim team won the 2012 Best of the West Championship. This was the 4th year in a row. The finished 3rd in the GGCL Championship Meet on January 30th and finished 4th in the Ohio Southwest Sectional meet on February 9th. They will compete in the Southwest Ohio District Swim meet on Feb. 16 at Miami University.

Smith, who is a 1995 Seton High School graduate is holding the 2013 Best of the West Champions trophy, which Seton has now won 4 years in a row. The swim team finished 3rd in the GGCL Championship Meet on January 30th and finished 4th in the Ohio Southwest Sectional meet on February 9.
