Tips from Children's on buying, using, and not using fireworks

Tips from Children's on buying, using, and not using fireworks

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - "During the summer, fireworks become a fascination for kids of all ages. But some don't realize how dangerous fireworks can be," says Wendy Pomerantz, MD,  emergency medicine physician and one of the leading coordinators for the Comprehensive Children's Injury Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Fireworks can result in severe burns, scars and disfigurement that can last a lifetime. Fireworks that are often thought to be safe, such as sparklers, can reach temperatures above 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, and can burn users and bystanders.

In 2010, an estimated 8,600 people were treated in emergency departments for fireworks injuries.

CFD says fireworks too risky for amateurs

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Fire Department says there is one safe way for people to deal with fireworks: don't use them.

Here is a release from the CFD on that topic:

– The Cincinnati Fire Department is reminding citizens to think safety first when it comes to the use of fireworks. Fireworks are too risky for amateurs, leave fireworks to the professionals.

Injuries from the intense heat of fireworks typically harm eyes, hands, arms or legs causing permanent scarring, loss of vision, dismemberment and even death. A report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says in the USA there are about 200 firework injuries a day during the month of July.

In addition, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports in 2008, fireworks caused an estimated 18,000 reported fires, including 1,300 total structure fires, 400 vehicle fires, and 16,300 outside fires.
